Prof. Piotr Sankowski from the University of Warsaw was involved in preparation of the Bratislava Declaration of Young Researchers – a document supporting a new generation of scientists.

On 19th July ministers for competitiveness (Research) from the 28 EU member states and EFTA countries met in Bratislava in order to discuss topics related to young researchers, among others, measures to support young researchers, increase their mobility, participation of women in research and attractiveness of scientific careers.

During the meeting they presented the Bratislava Declaration of Young Researchers written by young scientists, among them was Prof. Piotr Sankowski from the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics of the University of Warsaw who received 2 European Research Council grants – the ERC Starting Grant in 20010 and the ERC Proof of Concept Grant in 2015.

The preparation of the document was inspired by Slovak Presidency of the EU. Declaration calls on member states and the European Commission to recognize the special role that young researchers play for science, development, innovation and economic growth in Europe. Authors of the document focused on the four points. These include:

  • to enable great people to realise their ideas to understand and improve the world,
  • to sustainable and transparent career trajectories,
  • to a diverse, collaborative, inter-disciplinary, open, and ethical research environment,
  • to a healthy work-life balance.

The Declaration will be annexed to the Council conclusions for adoption at the Competitiveness Council, Research section, in November 2016.
