During his visit to Japan in September, Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, Rector of the University of Warsaw, gave an interview to the leading financial and economic newspaper “Nihon Keizai Shimbun”. In the interview, he discussed, amongst other subjects, the use of artificial intelligence in science.
In the interview, the Rector of the University of Warsaw, Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, highlights the need to increase human oversight of the use of artificial intelligence in science. He emphasises that the development of AI should be subject to certain regulations, and that universities and research institutions should introduce guidelines to strengthen the role of humans in the peer review of scientific publications.
Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak also addresses concerns that AI will lead to mass job losses. He compares the current debate to discussions surrounding earlier technological breakthroughs, including the Industrial Revolution. In his view, humans will not be completely replaced by technology, whilst at the same time new types of employment will emerge.
The interview also touches on the topic of cooperation between Poland and Japan. The Rector highlights its significant potential in advanced technologies and in the fields of defence and security.
The “Nihon Keizai Shimbun” also presents the UW as one of Europe’s leading centres for training specialists in artificial intelligence, highlighting the university’s strong position in mathematical and algorithmic research.
