“The University of Warsaw and the Universidad Católica de Santa María in Arequipa are connected not only by research and educational relations, but also by friendship and allegiance to common values. We are committed to developing and intensifying our cooperation,” Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, Rector of the University of Warsaw, said during a meeting with representatives of the Catholic University of Santa María and the Peruvian Embassy in Poland. The visit took place on 23rd May in the Golden Hall at the Krakowskie Przedmieście campus.

Cooperation between the University of Warsaw and the Universidad Católica de Santa María (Catholic University of Santa Maria) in Peru has been developing for years and concerns both archaeological research and projects in the natural and exact sciences, mainly in biology, chemistry and genetics.

During a visit to the Golden Hall on the UW campus at Krakowskie Przedmieście, representatives of both universities, as well as the Peruvian Embassy in Poland, expressed their willingness to intensify joint research and teaching activities.

“The University of Warsaw and Universidad Católica de Santa María in Arequipa are connected not only by research and educational relations, but also by friendship and allegiance to common values. We are committed to developing and intensifying our cooperation,” Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, the UW Rector said, adding, “We value the extraordinary openness of the Peruvians and their support also shown to people from abroad who would like to develop in their country. Our joint research, encompassing archaeology, agriculture, and artificial intelligence, contributes to a better understanding of world history and the development of innovative solutions.”

On 23rd May, the Casimir Palace hosted Dr Jorge Luis Cáceres Arce, Rector of the Universidad Católica de Santa María (UCSM) in Arequipa, Dr Máximo Rondón Rondón, UCSM’s Vice Rector for Research, Gloria Lissette Nalvarte Simoni de Isasi, Ambassador of Peru to Poland, and Secretary of the Peruvian Embassy in Poland.

“The wide-ranging cooperation between our universities has already lasted for three decades and we want to develop it even further. We appreciate the contribution of the University of Warsaw to the development of research on artificial intelligence, counting on the support of Polish researchers in the development of Peruvian scientific projects in this field. We would also like to work together on the study of our soils to help the development of agriculture in our country,” Dr Jorge Luis Cáceres Arce said.

“The meeting in the Golden Hall was also attended by Prof. Zygmunt Lalak, the UW Vice-Rector for Research, Prof. Sambor Grucza, the UW Vice-Rector for Cooperation and Human Resources, Prof. Ewa Bulska, Director of the UW’s Biological and Chemical Research Centre, and Ireneusz Grejcz from the UW’s Office for International Cooperation.

Joint research

The delegation from Peru also visited the Ochota Campus. During meetings with the authorities and scientists of the UW’s Biological and Chemical Research Centre, they discussed, for example, the expansion of joint activities within the PATHFOOD project – Creating a sustainable functional food chain: a pathway to EU climate neutrality and improved health. The collaboration would cover new research areas related to fertilisers and soil analysis. Prof. Łukasz Drewniak’s research group from the Laboratory of Bioprocess Engineering has joined the collaboration in this area. Two visits by Polish scientists to Arequipa were also planned.

Visitors also toured two laboratories at the UW’s CNBCh: Analytical Chemistry Research Centre and Organometallic Synthesis Laboratory.
