209 years of the University of Warsaw

„Thank you very much for every year we spend together. It is thanks to you that the University can develop at every level and in every field of its activities,” said Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, Rector of the University of Warsaw, during a birthday concert at the Warsaw University Library. On 20th November, the university community celebrated the 209th anniversary of the University of Warsaw.

“Pamiętajcie o ogrodach” (Remember the Gardens), “Opoczyńskie malowanki” (Opoczno Paintings)  and “Samba una nota” were selected pieces performed during the event by the university ensembles – the Academic Choir, the Hybrydy Theatre, and the “Warszawianka” Dance Theatre. The concert celebrating the 209th anniversary of the University of Warsaw took place on 20th November at the University of Warsaw Library. The evening’s special guest was Katarzyna Pakosińska – a graduate of Polish studies at the University of Warsaw, a stage and theatre actress, journalist, and master of ceremonies, who presented her original satirical and musical program entitled “Three Decades of Laughter.”

 

The ceremony was attended by, among others, Prof. Marek Gzik, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, Prof. Maria Mrówczyska, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, representatives of the University of Warsaw authorities, employees, students, doctoral candidates, and guests of the university.

A congratulatory letter on the occasion of the University of Warsaw’s anniversary was sent by Dr Marcin Kulasek, Minister of Science and Higher Education.

 

Artists from the University of Warsaw’s Hybrydy Theatre sang songs such as “Tolerancja” (Tolerance) from the repertoire of Stanisław Sojka, “Czy te oczy mogą kłamać” (Can These Eyes Lie?) and “Pamiętajcie o ogrodach” (Remember the Gardens) with lyrics by Agnieszka Osiecka and Jonasz Kofta.

 

The University of Warsaw Dance Theatre “Warszawianka” presented dances inspired by folk motifs, “Opoczyńskie malowanki” (Opoczno Paintings) and “Krakowiak,” choreographed by Małgorzata and Jan Łosakiewicz, with music composed by Witold Jarosiński. The University of Warsaw Academic Choir, conducted by Dr Irina Bogdanovich, performed the songs “Absolutnie” (Absolutely), “Samba una nota,” “Salsco,” and “Podaruj mi trochę słońca” (Give Me Some Sunshine).
