Doctoral candidate from UW at NASA

New scientific lab at UW

On 30th January, the University of Warsaw hosted a meeting devoted to the establishment of the Eastern Europe Research Lab as part of the UW’s Centre for French Culture and Francophone Studies.

Mediaeval fabrics from Dongola

Blue was among the most popular clothing colours of the inhabitants of Old Dongola. They wore mainly cotton and wool, according to research by chemists and archaeologists from the University of Warsaw. The results of their analysis of fabrics excavated on the territory of present-day Sudan were published in journal “Archaeometry”.

Joint research projects and education were the main issues discussed during the meeting between the authorithies of the University of Warsaw and representatives of Pfizer Europe.

Hermit crabs need to protect their soft abdomen in shells. They have recently begun to use plastic and other anthropogenic materials in this role, as scientists from the University of Warsaw and Poznań University of Life Sciences report in Science of the Total Environment.

One of the most interesting discoveries

The ancient Buddha statue found in the courtyard of the main temple of the Egyptian city of Berenike has been recognised by the American Society of Overseas Research as one of the most interesting discoveries in the Near Eastern archaeology of 2023. The distinction is owed partly to researchers from the Polish Centre for Mediterranean Archaeology (PCMA), University of Warsaw.

Various nematodes

Prof. Agnieszka Kloch from the UW Faculty of Biology contributed to the research on the genomes of nematodes – invertebrates that are parasites found in both animals and plants. The results show that two species of closely related nematodes, which were previously thought to be identical, are separated by millions of years of independent evolution.

A year in review

Medical teaching returned to the University of Warsaw after more than 70 years. The construction work at the site of a new hall of residence in Służew is nearly completed and the University’s strategy for the next decade has been adopted. The last twelve months at the University of Warsaw were the time of various important events, innovative discoveries and awards granted to the members of UW.

Success in the QuantERA Call

The project “QM3 – Quantum Multi-Modal Microscopy”, coordinated by Dr Radek Łapkiewcz from the UW’s Faculty of Physics, was selected for funding in the international QuantERA Call 2023.

UW scientist awarded the Fulbright STEM Impact Award

Prof. Piotr Szymczak from the UW Faculty of Physics received the Fulbright STEM Impact Award 2023-2024. This grant will allow him to carry out a project on the process of mineral carbonation, one of the proposed methods for removing excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The project will be conducted at the University of Minnesota, USA.

Planetary health survey

Planetary health is among new categories used in research. It helps to describe the current state of the environment and climate in relation to the wellbeing of the population. Scientists from the UW’s ICMCM are also involved in this kind of analyses. MOSAIC – the international project in which they are involved has received funding from the Horizon Europe programme.

Archaeological discoveries in Georgia

A fragment of a Latin inscription, a relief with the image of Minerva, and a kiln for firing pottery. These Roman-era discoveries were made by researchers from a team led by Prof. Radosław Karasiewicz-Szczypiorski from the Polish Centre for Mediterranean Archaeology, the University of Warsaw, and Prof. Shota Mamuladze from the Gonio-Apsaros Archaeological and Architectural Site.

Monitoring fungal biodiversity

A team of researchers from the UW’s Faculty of Biology, led by Prof. Julia Pawlowska, has been recognised in the BiodivMon competition of the European Biodiversity Partnership Biodiversa+. The UW scientists’ project concerns the monitoring of fungal diversity in the context of nature conservation.

Honorary doctorate for the European archaeologist

Prof. Freiherr Claus von Carnap-Bornheim, a researcher of the Roman period, was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Warsaw. The ceremony to confer the title took place on 5th December at Kazimierzowski Palace.

Prehistoric finds by UW biologists

A team of scientists, including researchers from the UW’s Faculty of Biology, has made a discovery of bones belonging to extinct animal species from about 240 million years ago. The specimens were found in the area of the Upper Silesian village of Miedary.

A new class of ruthenium catalysts

Prof. Bartosz Trzaskowski and Dr Juan Pablo Martinez from the UW’s Centre of New Technologies contributed to the creation of a new class of ruthenium catalysts important for ethenolysis – one of the most efficient processes by which compounds generated in petroleum processing can be obtained from vegetable oils.

Boomerang-like beams of light

A team of scientists at the University of Warsaw’s Faculty of Physics made a discovery that has implications for the study of light-matter interactions and represents a step towards the observation of a peculiar phenomenon known as a quantum backflow. The research results have been published in “Optica”.

Honorary doctorate for Prof. Freiherr C. von Carnap-Bornheim

On 5th December, a ceremony was held at the UW to confer an honorary doctorate of the University of Warsaw to Prof. Freiherr Claus von Carnap-Bornheim – an outstanding researcher specialising in the archaeology of central and northern Europe of the first millennium AD.
